IV Sedation - Dental Procedures Made Easier With IV Sedation
Intravenous sedation is one of the safest and most popular methods of sedating patients. It is administered quickly and provides a state of relaxation and analgesia.
It is a great option for those who suffer from anxiety or are afraid to visit the dentist. Patients who undergo IV sedation will need someone to accompany them and drive them home afterwards.
IV Sedation allows us to reduce anxiety and fear, making dental procedures more comfortable for you. The sedative medication administered via the IV will help you to relax and become sleepy. The sedative takes effect quickly so you can begin feeling calm and relaxed within minutes of the injection.
Even though you will be in a deep state of sedation, you will remain conscious and can respond to verbal or physical cues from our team members. In addition, patients who receive sedation will typically not remember their procedure, making it less likely to contribute to future dental fears and anxiety.
During the procedure, anesthesia specialists at Century Stone Dental will continuously monitor your vital signs, including heart rate and blood pressure. They will also ensure that your airway is clear and unobstructed, preventing respiratory issues. After the procedure, you will be moved to a recovery room where our anesthesia specialist will continue to monitor you while you return to a normal level of consciousness.
Unlike oral sedation, IV sedation puts you in a “semi-awake” state of reduced anxiety. You are still able to respond purposefully to verbal commands and light tactile stimulation. This level of sedation is also much safer than general anesthesia.
The sedative drugs can be rapidly and continuously adjusted to ensure your comfort. This is especially important for a lengthy dental procedure. The medications are administered directly into a vein in your arm or hand (usually in the elbow) through a small needle. You will be monitored closely throughout your treatment to ensure your safety and optimal sedation.
After your procedure, you will remain groggy for several hours. This is normal and safe for most people. After that, you will be able to drive home as long as you have someone to accompany you. You should not engage in any strenuous activities, operate machinery or make major decisions until the sedative has fully worn off. The dental team will give you instructions for managing drowsiness.

With intravenous (IV) sedation, a healthcare professional delivers the sedative medications directly into the bloodstream. This allows for rapid onset and precise control of the sedative effects. This ensures a calm and cooperative state, while minimizing risk of complications like allergic reactions or respiratory depression.
Our dental team is trained to quickly and accurately administer IV sedation in a safe and effective manner. Our in-office anesthesiologist is present for all IV sedation procedures and carefully monitors our patients to ensure their safety.
The sedative medications used in IV sedation provide both relaxation and pain relief. Our patients will wake up in a sleep-like state, and most will not remember the procedure. They will feel drowsy for a few hours afterward, and it is important that they follow the instructions provided to them regarding activity restrictions and post-sedation recovery. They should avoid strenuous activities, driving, operating machinery or making major decisions until they are fully awake and have regained their ability to concentrate.
IV Sedation is very cost effective, and provides a much safer level of sedation than oral sedation. With IV sedation, the patient is monitored closely, and if any complications occur, they can be immediately reversed.
IV sedation is a very efficient method of achieving moderate sedation, deep sedation, and even general anesthesia. It is very useful for patients who are uncooperative or have difficulty undergoing oral or surgical procedures.Unlike oral sedation, IV sedation induces amnesia, and many patients do not remember their dental appointment at all. This helps reduce the anxiety that many people experience with dental work, and it may encourage patients to schedule routine cleanings and other appointments on time.
While IV sedation is generally safe, it can lead to side effects like drowsiness, nausea, and dizziness. It is important that the healthcare professional performing the sedation has advanced training in this area and adheres to strict safety protocols. This includes a thorough assessment of the patient, frequent monitoring of oxyhemoglobin saturation, heart rate, and blood pressure, and rapid intervention in the event of any emerging symptoms.
